3 min survey about fine art & graphic design by doug crites
Written by Clement Faria on November 19, 2009 under Web Development.
This is a video survey of UMSL students talking about the differences between fine art and graphic design. The project resulted in the creation of study fine design, a movement that hopes to blur the line between fine art and graphic design, break boundaries, and start a new art revolution! Thanks to all of my friends for appearing in the video, especially my beautiful girlfriend Lauren LeBlanc. music by blur (please don’t sue me)

I went to a fine art university for 4 years in the drawing & painting program. It was the closest thing I could get to Illustration without going into the Design program, and it was… interesting, to say the least. People had very strange ideas about illustration and design.

Do you know how many months it took that fine artist to paint that 3000 painting? And how often the fineartist is able to sell a painting? Everyone is all ready able to buy all the software, have been for 10 years or more.

I was pretty decent Graphic Designer, And I had no experience in drawing. I just had to keep mind what elitist graphic designers frowned upon. I quit though.

Graphic Design in 10 years from now, will not exist, anyone is going to be able to become a graphic designer, just by buying the softwares and putting effort to know the basics. And it will not be graphic designer, but Graphic Artist or Graphic Art, or Artist. And that’s it!!! But still, companies will hire creative dudes!!! To be honest, if a painter sells a painting for 3000 dllrs in just one piece, who is more intelligent? The designer or the artist?

Graphic design is more than just advertising, you should learn about the topic you are commenting on before actually posting a comment.

It’s not rocket science. Graphic designers create work for other people while artist create work for themselves (or at least they try to).

Actually their is a pretty even mix of traditional fine art majors and graphic design majors. Many of these students have since graduated and landed great jobs.

Graphic design is not a fine art. It as an applied art. Most of the opinions here are made by obviouse FINE ART students that will never make any money or LIFE with their work. See you all at Walmart stoogies.
